What are Essential Oils? - Stephanie Leigh

What is an essential oil, exactly?

The use of essential oils is not a new practice.  In fact, there is evidence that essential oils and plant extracts have been used for a variety of reasons as far back as 4500 B.C.!  Essential oils are:

1. Aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants.

2. Plant concentrates.  Because of the distillation process, essential oils are far more potent than dried herbs.  See the fun facts below for some examples of just how much of one plant it can take to produce one of these tiny bottles!

3. Complete chemical profiles in every drop!

Fun Facts!  Just how potent are essential oils?  It takes....

~75 lemons to produce just one 15ml bottle of lemon essential oil.

~27 square feet of lavender plants to produce one 15ml bottle of lavender oil.

~One pound of raw peppermint to produce one 15ml bottle of peppermint oil.
